Seasonal Tasks: Summer
Too Hot to Do Much Maintenance
Deck and Patio Safety Check (30 minutes) Walk your deck or patio and look for trouble:
Loose or rotting boards
Nails sticking up (ouch)
Wobbly railings
Posts that wiggle when you push them
Give railings a good shake test. If they move, they need reinforcement. This isn't about aesthetics—it's about not falling off your deck at the Fourth of July barbecue.
The Caulk Inspection (20 minutes) Check caulk around:
Windows (inside and outside)
Doors
Bathtubs and showers
Anywhere two different materials meet
Caulk that's cracked, missing, or peeling needs replacement. This is actually a pretty satisfying DIY job if you're up for it. If not, it's cheap to have done.
Dryer Vent Cleaning (20 minutes) This one's important—clogged dryer vents cause house fires. Disconnect your dryer (or have someone do it), pull out the vent hose, and vacuum out the lint. If you can, clean the exterior vent too.
If your dryer is taking forever to dry clothes, this is why. If you're nervous about disconnecting things, hire someone. It costs about $100 and could save your house.
Trim Time (varies) Keep tree branches at least 3 feet from your house. Trim shrubs so they're not touching walls or windows. This prevents pest problems and keeps moisture away from your siding.
If the job requires a chainsaw or climbing, hire it out. Seriously. Tree work is how people get hurt.
